The PreK curriculum at TCS is designed to reflect our Classical and University-Model approach and emphasizes equipping students with the tools of learning. We prepare students for Kindergarten in a fun, engaging environment that builds a love for learning. The TCS PreK program is available to students who are four years old as of September 1. Like the TCS K-5 Curriculum, the PreK curriculum is designed to be vertically integrated, with consistency and linkages between topics and also horizontally integrated, allowing for a smooth and logical progression to Kindergarten. Classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30am until 2:30pm. The TCS PreK curriculum is described by subject area, below. The daily schedule includes lunch, recess, and a rest time. An optional "stay and play" hour is available from 2:30 - 3:30pm. Tuition is $1,200 per semester. Math Students use the Saxon K curriculum. TCS uses the Saxon pedagogy of incremental development: teaching in small pieces, continual review of those increments, and ongoing cumulative review. This approach was pioneered by John Saxon and Dr. Frank Wang (Ph.D in Mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology). We agree with John Saxon's assessment that "creativity comes from a well-prepared mind. What we want to give every child in America is the ability to work to develop a well-prepared mind." Reading / Language Arts Language Arts will focus on preparing students for reading (or strengthening early readers), learning several of the basic English phonograms, and using hands-on manipulatives. Handwriting with sounds is introduced using hands-on enrichment activities which builds up to using large-rule paper. Students engage in imaginative activities, as a precursor for creative writing, performing arts, and oral presentations in later grades. Bible A Biblical worldview is woven throughout the PreK curriculum. PreK students sing songs, learn great hymns of the faith, and memorize Bible verses. Character development. Monthly themes build character in areas such as serving, sharing, and obeying. Fine Arts Students are introduced to Fine Arts including an introduction to textures and techniques which enrich activities in other skill areas. Learning Skills The classroom teacher works with students to help establish routines, lengthen attention spans, develop fine and gross motor skills, and increase attentiveness and concentration.
